All Mr. Champale has to say about it is that, back on the Friday or Saturday evenings of his high school days, he and his friends used to cruise the dark suburban streets of his hometown in one of our parents’ station wagons, cardboard six-packs of Budweiser at our feet. We’d drink the beer in silence or we would talk, but whenever we finished one we’d hurl the empty bottle out of the car windows (bonus points if you hit a traffic sign). On these nights “Green Grass And High Tides” was invariably playing on the car stereo.
